Social Thinking Program

Michelle Garcia Winner, founder of the Social Thinking program states "Social thinking is what we do when we interact with people: we think about them. And how we think about people affects how we behave, which in turn affects how others respond to us, which in turn affects our own emotions.

Whether we are with friends, sending an email, in a classroom or at the grocery store, we take in the thoughts, emotions and intentions of the people we are interacting with."

Therapists at Outside The Lines have training which gives them the ability to implement the Social Thinking program to all who may benefit from it despite their "label" or diagnosis.  Children with autism and Asperger's tend to have social thinking deficits, however children with sensory processing dysfunctions also exhibit struggles during social situations secondary to the fact that their competing sensory needs override their ability to attend and observe social skills.

Children will learn how to become "social detectives".  They will work to understand other's points of view, emotions and body language.  Once children have the basics of social thinking we will work to find a group or peer they can interact with to practice their newly learned skills.
